Monte Magnificent left his family, hoping to return after building a successful career and become the most famous clown in the world. 20 years later fame and fortune still elude him as he suffers the indignities associated with the life he’s chosen.  Things go from bad to worse when he learns that his wife has died and he has to choose between the next step up in his career and going home to a town that hates him and the daughter he left.  He infuriates the guests at the memorial when he uses his clowning skills to cheer up his full grown daughter. But she can only pretend that things are find for so long. She leaves the service in tears. The local sheriff throws Monte out of the church and threatens him with jail if he returns. But with his daughter inside, Monte must find a way in so he can repair the damage his long absence has done.  In the end he surrenders his clowning to accommodate the emotional needs of his daughter.
